A water treatment installation is not finished when the equipment is connected. The installer still needs to place the system into service, check its operation and show you how to manage it.

This handoff is your best opportunity to catch unclear settings, missing labels and unanswered maintenance questions while the installer is still in the home. You do not need to understand every internal component. You do need to know what was installed, how water moves through it and what to do when something changes.

Start with the installed equipment

Ask the installer to identify every new component. Depending on the treatment plan, that may include a mineral tank, brine tank, filter housing, chemical feed tank, storage tank, drain connection, control valve, pressure gauge or dedicated faucet.

Match the equipment to the proposal or invoice. Check model numbers where they are visible. If the installed model differs from the paperwork, ask why and request corrected documentation before accepting the handoff.

Also ask what existing plumbing or equipment was removed, reused or left disconnected. This prevents confusion later when another plumber or service technician examines the installation.

Follow the water path

Have the installer point out where untreated water enters the system and where treated water returns to the house. If some fixtures are intentionally untreated, identify them now. Common examples may include outdoor faucets, irrigation lines or a kitchen cold water line.

Then locate the main shutoff, the equipment isolation valves and the bypass valve. Ask the installer to demonstrate the normal operating position and the bypass position. Take a clear photo of both positions if the valve markings are difficult to read.

Confirm what happens in bypass. In many installations, the home will still receive water, but that water will not pass through the treatment equipment. Ask whether any component must be unplugged, depressurized or handled differently before you operate the bypass.

Watch the startup and leak check

The installer should place the equipment into service according to its setup procedure. Watch for water at fittings, valve connections, filter housings, drain tubing and nearby plumbing that was disturbed during the work.

Run water at several fixtures while the system is operating. Check a nearby faucet, a fixture farther from the equipment and any dedicated treated water faucet. Ask whether temporary air, cloudiness, discoloration or unusual taste is expected after startup, and how long you should flush water before judging the result.

Look around the equipment after water has been running. A dry floor during the first few minutes does not rule out a slow leak. Use a paper towel around accessible connections if moisture is difficult to see, but do not remove covers or touch electrical components.

Confirm the drain connection

If the system backwashes, regenerates or produces reject water, ask the installer to show you where that water goes. The drain tubing should be supported, protected from kinks and positioned so it cannot easily pull loose.

Ask whether the installation uses an air gap or another backflow protection method. Have the installer explain what normal discharge looks and sounds like. You should also know which drain, standpipe or sink to inspect if you later find water near the equipment.

If practical, watch a manual cycle or the relevant portion of one. Confirm that water reaches the drain without overflowing, backing up or spraying outside the intended connection.

Review the programmed settings

Ask the installer to show you each homeowner adjustable setting and explain why it was selected. Useful items to record may include hardness, regeneration time, filter cycle frequency, clock setting, capacity, dosage or alert thresholds. The applicable settings depend on the equipment.

Do not settle for a photo of the control screen alone. Write down what each displayed value means and which settings you should not change without service guidance.

If the system responds to measured water conditions, ask which test result was used for setup. Keep that result with the equipment paperwork. Check normal water use

Use fixtures that reveal practical problems. Run a shower, flush a toilet and operate two fixtures together if that reflects normal household use. Listen for unusual vibration, hammering or sustained drain noise. Confirm that pressure and flow remain acceptable at the fixtures you rely on most.

If the system includes a storage tank or dedicated faucet, ask when full production should be available after startup. Confirm how the faucet operates and whether the first stored volume should be discarded.

For a softener, ask the installer to check that the brine tank contains the correct starting amount of water and salt for that design. Learn the recommended salt type, the practical refill level and where to look for bridging or excess standing water.

Learn the normal sounds and signals

Ask what the system sounds like during regular operation, regeneration, backwashing or pumping. A short recording of a demonstrated cycle can help you distinguish normal operation from a future problem.

Review indicator lights, display icons and audible alerts. Ask the installer to show you where error codes appear and what first step to take if the display is blank or an alarm sounds. Record the service contact separately from the equipment so it remains available if the display or connected app stops working.

Get the maintenance instructions in writing

Request a written list of homeowner tasks. It should identify the consumable or service item, the condition or interval that triggers action and the correct replacement specification. Examples may include adding salt, changing cartridges, refilling treatment media or solution, cleaning a screen and arranging periodic service.

Ask which maintenance tasks require shutting off water, using the bypass or relieving pressure. Have the installer demonstrate any task you are expected to perform. If a filter housing needs a special wrench or a control requires a particular button sequence, confirm that the tool or instructions are included.

Clarify what the warranty requires

Find out which company handles equipment problems, installation problems and routine maintenance. Those responsibilities may not belong to the same party.

Ask what documentation is needed for a claim and whether registration is required. Confirm whether maintenance records, approved replacement parts or professional service are conditions of coverage. Keep the written warranty, model and serial numbers, final invoice and installer contact information together.

Agree on how performance will be checked

The handoff should define what success looks like. Ask whether the provider will perform a follow-up water test, which water characteristic will be checked and where the sample should be collected. The relevant check might involve hardness, iron, sediment, taste, odor or another issue identified before installation.

Ask how long the system should operate before that check is meaningful. Also ask what happens if the result does not match the stated treatment goal. The answer should identify who evaluates the setup, whether settings are adjusted and when equipment sizing or treatment scope would be reconsidered.

Do one final walkaround

Before signing the completion paperwork, inspect the work area. Confirm that tubing and electrical cords are secured, equipment is stable and service access has not been blocked. Make sure labels are readable and the drain route, bypass position and shutoffs are easy to identify.

Take photos of the complete installation, valve positions, control settings, labels, serial numbers and drain connection. These images create a useful baseline if something is moved, leaks or behaves differently later.
