A water softener needs more than an occasional bag of salt. The brine tank has to let water reach the salt, form brine and send that brine through the softener during regeneration. If any part of that process stops working, the tank can look full while the softener produces little or no treated water.

The most useful ownership habit is to watch how the salt level changes. A working system normally consumes salt over time. The exact rate depends on water hardness, household water use, softener capacity and control settings, so there is no single correct refill schedule. What matters is whether your system follows a consistent pattern.

Start with the salt level, not the calendar

Open the lid and note where the salt sits inside the tank. A strip of removable tape on the outside can help you track the approximate level without relying on memory. Check again after the softener has completed several normal regeneration cycles.

If the level has dropped, the system is at least drawing from the salt supply. If it never seems to move, investigate before adding more salt. Continually topping off an apparently full tank can hide a bridge or a layer of compacted salt at the bottom.

Also look at the shape of the salt surface. Loose pellets or crystals that shift when gently touched are different from a hard, continuous crust. A hollow space under that crust is a salt bridge.

How to check for a salt bridge

A salt bridge forms when the upper layer hardens while salt underneath dissolves or settles. The bridge can support its own weight, leaving an empty space below it. From above, the tank may appear to have plenty of salt.

Use a clean, blunt handle to press gently against several areas of the salt surface. Do not strike the tank, force the handle into internal parts or use a sharp tool that could puncture the brine tank. If the tool meets a hard shelf and then breaks into an open space, you have probably found a bridge.

Break the crust into manageable pieces without damaging the brine well, float assembly or tank walls. Remove unusually large hardened chunks if they will not dissolve readily. Check the bottom for loose salt and confirm that internal components have not been pushed out of position.

Do not pour more salt over an intact bridge. That adds weight without restoring contact between the salt and the water below.

Salt mush is a different problem

Salt mush is a dense, wet layer that collects near the bottom of the tank. It may restrict water movement or interfere with the brine components. Unlike a bridge, it often feels like a thick paste rather than a hard shelf.

If the bottom contains a substantial compacted layer, follow the manufacturer's instructions for placing the softener in bypass and disconnecting power before cleaning. Scoop out the loose salt and sludge into a suitable container. Avoid pulling on tubing or moving the float assembly unless the manual specifically explains how it is removed.

Rinse the empty tank with clean water and remove residue with a nonabrasive tool. Do not introduce household cleaners unless the equipment manufacturer allows them and provides a rinse procedure. Cleaning chemicals left in the tank can enter the regeneration process.

Before refilling, check that the brine well is upright, tubing connections are secure and the float can move freely. Restore the system according to its manual, add the specified salt and complete any required manual regeneration or reset procedure.

Know what the water in the tank can tell you

Some water in a brine tank can be normal. The visible amount varies by equipment design and by where the system is in its regeneration cycle. A dry-looking tank is not automatically a failure, and water above the salt is not automatically an overflow.

Look for a change from the system's usual condition. Water that keeps rising, reaches an overflow fitting or appears on the floor needs attention. Possible causes include a blocked drain line, a stuck float, an injector problem, a valve problem or a control cycle that did not finish.

Do not keep starting regeneration cycles when the tank is already unusually full. Each attempt may add more water, depending on the system's design and the point where the cycle fails. Put the unit in bypass if needed to stop an active leak, then arrange service.

A tank that remains unusually dry also deserves investigation if the softener is not consuming salt. Confirm that the water supply is open, the bypass is in its normal service position and the control has power. After that, the problem may be inside the valve or brine system.

Check the salt before pouring it in

Use the salt type listed in the owner's manual. Do not assume every pellet, crystal, block or substitute is suitable for every softener. If you are changing salt types, ask whether the tank should be allowed to run low first and whether the new product affects cleaning needs.

Inspect each bag for moisture damage and hard clumps. Store unopened salt above a damp floor and away from water leaks. Salt that has absorbed moisture may be difficult to pour and more likely to enter the tank as large compacted pieces.

When refilling, look into the tank first. Check for bridges, standing water that is higher than usual, sludge and salt stuck around the float assembly. Adding salt should not replace this inspection.

Do not fill beyond the equipment maker's stated limit. Leaving some open space makes it easier to inspect the tank and break up minor crusting before it becomes a larger obstruction.

Keep the area around the tank serviceable

A brine tank should be reachable without moving stored boxes, shelving or heavy household items. You need enough room to open the lid, pour salt safely, inspect tubing and see the floor around the tank.

Keep the lid seated so dust and debris do not fall into the salt. Wipe up spilled salt promptly. Salt can attract moisture, leave residue and make a small leak harder to notice.

Inspect the overflow connection, if present. The hose should not be kinked, pinched or used as a substitute for repairing a filling problem. Confirm where it discharges and make sure that location remains open. The softener's main drain line is separate and also needs a secure, unobstructed route.

Look for moisture around tubing connections and under the tank. A shallow tray or water alarm can make a leak easier to detect, but it does not correct the cause or guarantee protection from an overflow.

Use the control panel as part of the inspection

Check that the display is on and that the clock or usage information appears reasonable for the model. A power interruption, unplugged transformer or lost setting can change when the softener regenerates.

If the control reports an error, record the exact code before resetting anything. Also note the salt level, water level, valve position and any unusual sounds. Those details give a service provider more to work with than a general report that the water feels different.

Do not change hardness, capacity, salt dose or regeneration settings simply because the tank is not using salt. A mechanical or brine-draw problem will not necessarily be fixed by increasing a setting. Save the existing values before making any adjustment, and compare them with the manual or the installer's setup record.

Know when the problem is beyond tank cleaning

Call for service when the salt is loose and available but the level does not fall, the tank repeatedly overfills, the system sends water continuously to the drain, an error returns after a reset or a manual regeneration does not complete normally.

Before scheduling, gather the model number, the control settings, a description of the salt and water levels, the displayed error code and the approximate point when performance changed. Ask whether the visit includes testing the brine draw, injector, float, drain flow and regeneration sequence.

Also ask what must be working before the technician leaves. A useful completion check may include observing the unit enter the proper cycle, confirming that brine is drawn, checking for leaks and verifying that the control returns to service. If treatment performance still needs confirmation, ask when and how that will be checked.

Build a simple refill routine

Each time you open a new bag, inspect before you pour. Note the existing level, loosen minor surface crusting, look for unusual water and check the surrounding floor. Record how much salt you added and any change you noticed.

That small record helps you distinguish normal variation from a developing problem. A household using more water may consume more salt, while a sudden stop in consumption may point to a bridge, a control issue or failed brine draw.
