A brochure tells you what a provider wants you to believe. A past customer tells you what happened after the final bill was paid. Before you choose a provider from the grid, ask for references and make the calls that matter.
Ask for references that match your job
Ask for two or three customers who had a system installed that is similar to the one you are considering. A whole-house unit and a single under-sink filter are different jobs, and a reference for one tells you little about the other. Also ask for a customer whose water source matches yours, such as a well or a municipal supply, if that applies to your home.
What to ask on the call
Ask how long ago the install was done, so you know whether the customer has lived with the system long enough to report on it. Ask whether the crew arrived when promised, whether the final bill matched the quote, and whether anyone had to call back after sign-off. Ask who they contacted when something went wrong and how long it took to get a real answer.
Ask whether the system still does what it was sold to do. Taste, water pressure, and any staining are the usual signs. A customer who has used the system for a year knows more than the sales sheet does.
Listen for what is left out
Pay attention to what the reference avoids. If they talk only about the install day and hesitate when you ask about the first service visit, ask a direct question about that visit. A vague answer is useful information.
Confirm the reference is real
Ask the provider to let you contact the reference yourself rather than passing a message through their office. A written testimonial with no name you can reach is marketing, not a reference. Treat it as one more piece of sales material.
Compare the answers side by side
Write each provider's answers on the same sheet, using the same questions in the same order. Differences in response time, follow-up care, and whether the customer would hire the provider again tell you more than a small gap in the quote.
