A rotten egg odor can make it seem obvious that your home needs a sulfur filter. The smell alone does not tell you where the problem begins, however. An odor that affects every faucet calls for a different response than one found only in hot water, one bathroom or a rarely used drain.

Before you commit to equipment, map the odor through the house and ask each provider to explain what evidence supports the proposed treatment. This helps you avoid installing a whole-house system for a problem located in the water heater, plumbing or a single fixture.

Confirm that the odor is in the water

Some drain and sink problems smell like contaminated water even when the incoming water has no odor. Fill a clean glass with cold water, carry it away from the sink and smell it in another room. Repeat the check with hot water in a separate glass. Do not rely only on the odor around the drain.

If the glass does not smell but the sink area does, inspect the drain, overflow opening and any fixture components where residue can collect. A plumbing or cleaning issue should be addressed before you shop for treatment equipment.

Make a hot and cold water map

Check several fixtures instead of testing only the kitchen sink. Include a faucet close to the water entry point, a fixture farther away, an upstairs fixture if applicable and an outdoor tap that bypasses the water heater. At each location, check cold water first and then hot water.

Write down whether the odor appears immediately or only after the water runs. Also note whether it is stronger after the fixture has been unused. These observations can help distinguish a problem affecting the incoming supply from one developing inside the home.

If only hot water smells, ask for the water heater to be evaluated before approving a whole-house sulfur treatment system. Conditions inside a water heater and reactions involving its components can produce odor. Replacing or servicing the relevant component may be more appropriate than treating all incoming water.

If both hot and cold water smell throughout the house, testing and treatment at the water entry point may make sense. If the odor appears at only one fixture, inspect that fixture and its branch plumbing first.

Identify the water source and existing equipment

Tell the provider whether the home uses a private well or a public water supply. If the home has a well, identify the wellhead, pressure tank and any existing treatment equipment. If it uses public water, note whether nearby homes report the same issue and whether the odor is present at an outdoor tap near the service entry.

List every device already in the water path, including sediment filters, softeners, carbon filters, chemical feed systems and cartridge housings. Record where each device sits in relation to the pressure tank and water heater. An old filter or poorly maintained treatment tank can contribute to odor, so the provider should not assume the raw water is the only possible source.

Ask what testing supports the recommendation

Ask the provider which water characteristics need to be measured before selecting equipment. The useful test panel depends on the water source and the treatment method being considered, but the recommendation may need to account for odor-causing compounds, iron, manganese, pH, hardness and other conditions that affect treatment performance.

Ask where each sample will be collected. A sample taken after existing equipment may not describe the untreated water. For a well system, the provider may need samples from more than one point to determine whether the odor originates in the source water or develops within the plumbing and equipment.

Do not accept a proposal that treats the odor description as a complete diagnosis. Ask for the test findings in writing and have the provider connect each major equipment component to a specific finding.

Compare the actual treatment process

Different sulfur odor systems can use aeration, oxidation, filtration, chemical feed or combinations of these processes. The equipment label matters less than understanding what happens to the water and what the system requires from the house.

Ask each provider:

What contaminant or condition is this system designed to address? What process changes or removes it? Does the system need a drain, electrical outlet, chemical tank, air intake or discharge location? Will it backwash, and if so, where will that water go? Could the proposed process create particles that must be filtered? How will iron, manganese, hardness or changing water conditions affect performance? What settings must be adjusted after installation?

If a proposal includes more than one treatment stage, request a simple diagram showing the order. Ask why each stage is necessary and what would happen if it were omitted.

Check where air and odor will go

Some treatment processes introduce air or release gases from the water. Ask whether the equipment needs venting and where that vent will terminate. The proposed location should not simply move an unpleasant odor into a basement, utility room or occupied part of the home.

Also ask about noise. Equipment that draws air, cycles valves or backwashes may be noticeable when it operates. Find out which components make noise and whether the planned location is near a bedroom or living area.

Verify the plumbing and drain plan

Have the provider identify the installation location before you sign. Confirm that there is enough space to operate valves, open covers, replace media and remove tanks later. Check for a nearby electrical supply if the system requires one.

If the equipment discharges water, ask to see the exact drain route. The proposal should state who supplies and installs that connection. It should also explain how the installation will prevent drain water from flowing backward into the treatment system.

Ask whether the system can meet the household's peak water demand without creating an objectionable pressure drop. If the equipment must backwash, have the provider verify that the well, pump, plumbing and drain arrangement can support the required flow.

Define what successful treatment means

A promise to fix the smell is too vague. Ask where and how the result will be checked. Will the provider test treated water, inspect both hot and cold fixtures, or return after the system has completed normal operating cycles?

Ask what happens if the odor remains only in hot water after installation. The answer should clarify whether water heater service is included, excluded or handled by another trade. Also ask how the provider distinguishes an equipment problem from an odor developing elsewhere in the plumbing.

Understand the service work before buying

Request a list of the recurring tasks the system needs. Depending on the design, that could include adding treatment chemicals, cleaning an injector, replacing filters, checking an air intake, sanitizing components, testing treated water or replacing treatment media.

For each task, ask who performs it, what supplies it requires and how the homeowner can tell that service is due. Confirm whether replacement parts and media are standard items or must come from that provider. Ask what happens if the company stops servicing the model.

Get the warranty terms and service responsibilities in writing. Separate coverage for the equipment from coverage for labor, water quality adjustments and return visits.

Use the same comparison list for every provider

Give each provider the same fixture observations, water source details, existing equipment list and test information. Then compare the proposed treatment process, installation needs, maintenance duties, performance checks and responsibility for unresolved odor.
